Why Leaves Feel Sticky Under Trees

 

Leaves and objects under certain trees can get sticky mainly because of a substance called "honeydew." Honeydew is a sugary liquid excreted by small sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scale insects, or whiteflies that live in trees. These insects feed by piercing the leaves or branches and sucking out the sap, which is rich in sugars and water. Their digestive systems cannot use all the sugar, so they excrete the excess as tiny, sticky droplets. This honeydew falls from the insects onto the leaves and anything else beneath the tree—cars, patio furniture, sidewalks, or other plants—making everything feel tacky or sticky to the touch.

 

How Honeydew is Produced

 

When insects like aphids, scale, or whiteflies feed on tree sap, they use a special mouthpart that acts like a straw to tap into the plant's vascular system (specifically the phloem, which carries nutrients and sugars). Because sap contains a lot of sugar and water but not much protein, these insects need to suck up a lot of sap to get the nutrients they need. They then excrete the extra liquid as honeydew, which is left behind as a sticky residue.

 

What Types of Trees and Insects Cause Stickiness

 

Sticky residue is especially common under:

• Linden trees (also known as basswood or lime trees)
• Maple trees
• Oak trees
• Willows
• Elms

The main insects responsible include:

• Aphids (tiny green, black, or white insects, sometimes found in clusters on stems and leaves)
• Scale insects (look like small bumps or blisters on branches and leaves)
• Whiteflies (tiny white flying insects, often found on the undersides of leaves)

 

Is Honeydew Harmful?

 

Honeydew itself isn't directly harmful to humans, pets, or most plants. However, because it's so sugary, it encourages the growth of a black, sooty mold that can cover leaves, branches, and anything else the honeydew lands on. The mold looks like a dark powder or film and can block sunlight from reaching the leaves, which can weaken the tree over time if it’s severe. Also, honeydew can attract ants, bees, and wasps.

Sticky surfaces under trees can be unpleasant, and honeydew can be tough to wash off cars, garden furniture, or windows. Over time, it can even damage paint finishes if not cleaned.

 

How to Manage Sticky Leaves and Honeydew

 

• Rinse affected surfaces (like cars or furniture) with water regularly to prevent buildup and staining.
• Discourage insects by hosing down trees, especially if you see clusters of insects on leaves or branches.
• If the problem is severe, consider using horticultural oil or insecticidal soap on the tree, but use these products according to label instructions to protect beneficial insects and avoid damaging the tree.
• Encourage natural predators, such as ladybugs or lacewings, which feed on aphids and other honeydew-producing insects.
• Poor tree health (from drought, poor soil, etc.) can attract more insects, so keep trees healthy with proper watering and care.

 

Other Possible Reasons for Stickiness Under Trees

 

While honeydew is by far the most common reason, occasionally, other tree-related factors like excess sap from some trees (such as pines) due to injury or disease can also cause stickiness. However, for most broadleaf trees and in the vast majority of sticky situations, honeydew from insects is the real cause.
